I am looking for a program that will show what's going on
during bootup.

I am trying to track down some periodic problems that occur
despite OS reinstallation, virus and spybot scans, etc.

Press F8 during startup, and select bootlogging, then read the bootlog.

Microsoft's Bootvis does this. Don't overlook the graphic displays.

Unfortunately, MS doesn't have that tool at their site anymore:

"The Bootvis.exe tool is no longer available from this site."
