My computer suddenly has started asking me for a password upon log in.
Has never done so in the past. No password has ever been set so it is
no problem logging in, just another step in starting up that I don't
need. Any thoughts as to how to go back to it never asking for a
password and just booting up normally?

Open control panel, and click the Users Account Icon, and Click on the
account you do not want a password for any longer, and it will open up your
manager, click on
Remove Password,
Hope that helps

Heres an easier way, just found this From Rick "Nutcase" Rogers answer to a
post below on
XP startup/shutdown
Looks easier than what i suggested..
Hi,

1) Click start/run, type "control userpasswords2" (without the quotes) and
click ok. Uncheck the box requiring a username and password, click apply/ok
and follow the prompts to set up a default logon.

2) Control Panel/Users applet, click on "change the way...." and re-enable
the Welcome screen.
