Power point freezes/locks up when I try to insert Clip Art. This happens
whether I click on the icon on the page to insert or I try to insert from the
menu. Interesting, the task list (from Ctr-Alt-Del) does not say 'Not
responding', but I can not close the insert file or do anything. I have to
end of killing the application.

It does not happend every time, sometimes I get lucky. Re-booting does not
seem to help.

Which version of PPT are you using?

You might try emptying your Temporary Internet Files folder as an initial
troubleshooting step.

2002 PPT
Emptying temp int files did not seem to help. I am running XP Professional
as OS.

Hm. Do you receive any error messages at all?

If you're using Norton AV, I would disable the Office Plug-In. Follow these
instructions to disable the DLL:
http://www.rdpslides.com/pptfaq/FAQ00387.htm

I'd also try compacting and the other options listed here:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;300863

You might also try not searching the clips online:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;285638

You might also try updating your MDAC:

bf53-14332ef092c9&DisplayLang=en

Have you applied SP-3 for Office 2002?

In another thread a poster was having a similar issue. This is his solution
1. Remove XP Service Pack 2.
2. Install MDAC components as explained in method 2 of KB 884424.
3. Reinstall XP Service Pack 2.

KB 884424 is here: http://support.microsoft.com/?scid=kb;en-us;884424

Wish I could come up with something definitive for you.
