Locking up after no activity

Friend of mine is running into a problem where his computer is locking up
tight as a drum after periods of inactivity. Sometimes it can be a matter
of minutes, or other times a matter of hours. If he leaves the computer
alone, he comes back, and it is locked up tight. Only way to correct it is
to completely power down. He has tried disabling his screen saver, but that
made no difference. Any ideas?

Have you checked all of the cooling fans for proper operation? You might
have an intermittent fan.
