Locking tables when in shared default open mode

I have an Access XP back-end database on a server with 5-6 users each with
their own local Access XP front-end.

Users regularly get an error message saying that either the database cannot
be found, or that it is being used exclusively, or that it is locked by
another user. This happens when both opening the database and whilst using
the database and accessing data in the back-end. The user quoted as locking
the database is not always the same user. If they repeat what they were
trying to do then they get access.

The back-end is on a Novell server and all users have full rights to the
area where the back end is.

All users are set to Shared default open mode and record level locking. This
started to happen when the users were upgraded to WindowsXP and AccessXP.
The database itself has in its lifetime been upgraded from Access2 to '97, to
2000&'97 and now to XP.

Does anyone have any ideas what is causing this?

Debbie.
