locking in borders and shading?

hi, i use a very elaborate spreadsheet with lots of different borders and
shadings, etc.. i frequently cut and paste various numbers to and from
different cells and unless i use "paste special, values" it changes the
border and shading setting of the dsestination cell to be the same as the
original cell, i am hoping there is a way to kind of "lock in" the shading
and borders so that i don't have to use paste special all the time, any ideas?

thanks

You have to use Paste Special. At that point, in Excel 2002, you can select
"all except borders", formulas and number formats, values and number formats.

You could create a vba macro that does what you want, then assign the macro to
a toolbar button and/or a shortcut key.

I don't know of a way to lock formats other than protecting the cell &
sheet, which would also prevent pasting values.

However, if you're looking for a faster/easier way to "paste special,
values", you can add the "paste special, values" button to your Excel
toolbar.

To do this:
- Select Tools Menu
- Select Customize (to open the Customize dialog box)*
- Select Commands Tab
- Under "Categories", select "Edit"
- Under "Commands", find the "Paste Values" button (a clipboard w/ "12")
- Click & drag that "Paste Values" button to any Toolbar you want
- Close the Customize dialog box

You can create a keyboard solution by recording a macro, and assign a
shortcut.

*You can also open the Customize dialog box by right clicking in any
toolbar.
