have to restart and it says the installation was unsuccessful. this time it
restarted and asks me whether to run vista or xp. So i clcik vista and the
bar loads then the monitor turns off again and the computer is still running
and if i try to access my old xp it asks for an administartor password and i

Your not, by chance, using an ATI RADEON 9xxx card are you? I am not sure if
it extends to other video cards (manufacturers or types), but in my testing I
have confirmed that the Microsoft provided driver for my R9800pro is
definately broken. Every time you receive a UAC prompt, or logon screen, it
appears completely black (monitor in standby). I found by blindly hitting
"enter" or entering a password and pressing "enter" will get you past this.

After getting the interface to display I immediately went to Windows Update
and found a new driver. After installing this, the problem went away.
