Hey all. For some reason all files in My Music folder are "locked". I can
play them and delete them but not move or copy them. Any ideas why? TIA.

Sounds like MS is applying DRM to anything you put in there.
It's funny that MS added that when Apple is removing it...

Well, the problem is that I disabled the option in Media Player to download
DRM for the songs. Also, I don't have much knowledge of the DRM system - if
your files are protected, does it mean you cannot copy your music files to
*any* location? Sounds weird to me. Also, I'm using another software called
"MediaMonkey" and it copies the music files with no problem...

How are you trying to move or copy them, and what is the exact error you
receive?

Placing the cursor on the file names should tell you if the file is
protected; for example, "WMA Protected". You can also Right Click on the
directory and the individual files and check properties to get the name
of the file owner and the security settings. The license Tab will tell
you if the file is protected. Administrator privileges with not let you
over-ride the content protection. (An exception to this is that
"TrustedInstaller" protected files can be unprotected by a slightly
complex procedure that involves changing the name of the owner from
TrustedInstaller to Administrator and then back to TrustedInstaller).

A major culprit is Microsoft's Windows Media Audio (WMA) Protected
files. You cannot rename, move or copy these files. Software exists that
will remove the copy protection on "unlicensed" files.
More interesting is software that removes the copy protection on
"licensed" files. This software will only work on properly licensed
files. The vendors that market this software claim that this is a legal
usage. One example is WMAConvert.

Hey all,

First of all, it simply didn't give me the option to copy. I right-click the
file, choose Copy and then go to my desktop and it doesn't give the Paste.
In any case, after rebooting several times, the problem is gone.... Go
figure.....

Ah, OK - in that case it probably isn't correlated to DRM or non-DRM but
rather to some broken third party context menu handler. It's good to know
it's now working. If it ever fails again, one key might be to know what
context menu options you *do* have, which might indicate an extending
application that isn't functioning correctly. =\

Well, first of, the music files are not protected, that's why I grew
curious. The problem is that I don't have anything in context menus except
the functions Vista provides and WinAce...

If the files are Windows Media Audio Protected (.wma) you generally
cannot rename, move, or copy these files unless you first remove the
copy protection.
This is another of those unfortunate "features" that is courtesy of
Microsoft, the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), and the
Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA).
