help please

HELP My computer locks up when I play music, it also turns off for no reason
all the time. I'm running Vista and I hate it but how can I fix this? Please
help. The only CD I have that came with the laptop is a Vista upgrade. Any
ideas? Thanks

I had a similar problem playing DVDs when I upgraded to Windows XP Pro on my
laptop. After a great many emails back and forth to the manufacturer, it
turned out to be a driver problem. I can't recall if I just had to reinstall
or if a new driver was issued. However, I suspect your problem might also be
a driver issue

Can you boot into Safe Mode, open the Event Viewer
to see if there are any logged reports that might give a hint of hardware
failure or service that might help in better diagnosing the problem?

I would also check Problem Reports and Solutions to see if there any
solutions to problems you might be encountering.

Not enough information to give you focused help. Here are some general
things to try:

1. Did this happen all of a sudden? If yes, do a System Restore to when
things worked. To run System Restore, go to the Start Orb and in the
Start Search box type "System Restore" without the quotes. System
Restore will appear in the Programs result. Click on it, allow the UAC
prompt, and follow the wizard.

2. Answer the First Question Of Troubleshooting: what changed between
the time things worked and the time they didn't? If the issues arose
after installing something, uninstall the something and see if that helps.

3. If #1 and #2 aren't applicable, look in Event Viewer and in Problems
& Solutions (Control Panel) for clues.
Start Orb>search box>type: eventvwr.msc [enter]

4. If the above steps don't, update all your drivers. Get them only from
the laptop mftr.'s tech support site for your specific model computer.

5. If none of the above steps help, test the hardware:

6. If none of the above helps, contact the laptop mftr.'s tech support
for repair/replacement.

Standard disclaimer: I can't see and test your computer myself, so these
are just suggestions based on many years of being a professional
computer tech; suggestions based on what you've written. You should not
take my suggestions as a definitive diagnosis. Testing hardware failures
often involves swapping out suspected parts with known-good parts. If
you can't do the testing yourself and/or are uncomfortable opening your
computer, take the machine to a professional computer repair shop (not
your local equivalent of BigComputerStore/GeekSquad). If possible, have
all your data backed up before you take the machine into a shop.

it is possible the computer insides are dirty and need to be cleaned of dust, other garbage.
do you have a program to monitor fans and temperatures. might be a good idea.

in the mean time under System Properties, Advanced tab, Startup section, uncheck the box for auto restart.
this may give some more information to diagnose the problem.
