Locked from editing a document

I am trying to edit a passworded document. I can get into the document, but
when I try to edit it I get a message at the bottom of the screen that says
"This modification is not allowed because the selection is locked". Does
anyone know why this is happening and how I can fix it? Thanks.
 
I take it the document is password protected against opening and you have
the password?
That being the case it seems likely that you are using a trial version of
Word 2007 that has expired or you have not activated a retail version.
