Editing a word document

i have put all my existing word documents onto my new laptap, i've downloaded
the trail office and when i open an existing document and attempt to edit it,
i get a message at the bottom of the screen saying that i cannot make that
modification because the selection is locked?
I have no idea how to remedy this problem. Can anyone please help?
