Lock

I have a blue padlock appear in the centre of my display that locks and
unlocks. It can't be moved or close and my mouse cursor passes behind it. I
can lock and unlock the PC as usual but it has no effect on the symbol.
Do you know what this is and how to get rid of it?

Please provide more information about your computer such as:

1. Is this a standalone computer or a workstation on a domain?
2. What changed between the time you didn't have the padlock image and
the time you did?
3. What version of XP do you have (Home/Pro) and Service Pack level?
4. What antivirus software do you have installed (version and
subscription status)?
5. What antimalware software have you run, if any?
6. What does "I can lock and unlock the PC as usual" mean?

Perhaps its something to do with your display itself rather than the
computer. Does pressing any of the display configuration keys on the monitor
help?

There are a couple of spyware programs that put odd things in/on the
desktop. I haven't seen a blue lock, but it could be a new one.

You might try looking at the task manager and closing things one at a time
to see if the lock goes away. You won't be able to close everything, since
some are required by the system.

I'm always suspicious of anything that suddenly appears without invitation.

Right click desktop
Select "Properties"
Select "Desktop" tab
Select "Customize Desktop"
Select "Web"

Make sure that the picture is not loading from there. Normally nothing
should be checked, but it's a user preference.

Let us know.

Thanks for your help. It turned out that the fault was in the Dell flat
panel monitor not the OS.

You were right! The fault was with the Dell flat screen monitor. Swapped
the monitor with a spare PC and the problem transferred. Thanks for you help!
