Lock-up On Running Compatibility Check!

My system consists of: AMD Athlon 1.2GHz, 2-40 GB IDE Hard drives, 256 MB DDR
Ram, Abit Siluro T400 Graphics card, Creative Soundblaster Live MP3 + 5.1
Sound card. I am running Windows 98 SE and am trying to change to XP Pro.
I'm going with a full install, rather than an upgrade because of problems I
created when I mistakenly tried to clean the registry and messed it up.
After reloading and running 98, I thought I would try to make sure everything
was compatible before changing the OS; to make the switch to, and run, XP
Pro, as problem free as possible.
I have tried to run the compatability program from the Microsoft Website
(1st), and the XP Pro CD, both numerous times. Each time, the computer
locks up when the program gets to the "DVD Movie Player". I just don't know
what to do about it. Why is this happening? Should I just go ahead and
install XP over the 98, or is it really necessary to use the compatibility
check?

Try removing the DVD movie player software, it may not XP
compatible in the W98 version or there is some other
software or hardware problem, perhaps the DVD Player is
passing but the next program is causing the crash..
I think that the hardware has all passed or has been
reported, the software checks happen last.

I would suggest that you install XP and delete the current
partition and do a clean install of XP, use an XP SP2 CD to
upgrade to SP2 and then re-install your applications.
How to Install
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;316941
Order SP2
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/updates/sp2/cdorder/en_us/default.mspx
The CD order is free, MS even pays the postage.
If your XP CD has SP2 (recent stock does) no need to order.

You might look on the web and check to see what the software
company says about an XP version of their software. It
could be something that came bundled with the DVD player.
