Lock up after loading patches

After much trial and error, I have narrowed a lock up
problem to download patches to XP or Explorer that were
available over the last 5 months. There are at least 21
patches that I eliminated through restore to correct the
problem. Does anyone have a recommendation as to recent
patches that might cause such a problem. All downloads
went through a firewall and virus scan.

Most of the smart people here will probably suggest that you turn OFF your
antivirus program before you install those updates, as the AV will
sometimes interfere with the proper installation.

Hope this helps, and, as always, your mileage may vary,

One where I have some reason for suspicion is the ntoskrnl.exe (build
1151) installed by patch Q811493, and included in the recent rollup.
You should have a copy of the original version in
windows\system32\drivers in either drivers.cab or in sp1.cab if SP1 is
installed. Look in there, extract it, and use it to replace the one in
Windows\system32 (Rename that one first so you could put it back).
Then reboot.

And please let me know if this does the trick
