lock a total row below a list & allow inserting in the list?

When I place a total row below, but outside of, a list and another
calculated row below that then lock and protect only the total and calculated
rows, the insert function in the list goes away. I want to allow users to
add new records to the list but not change the formulas in the two rows below
the list. Is this possible?

When protecting the sheet, check the option "Allow users to insert rows". I
think this option was introduced in Excel2003, so if you work with an
earlier version you might be out of luck.

Thank you for your response. I have tried that and it did not help. It will
allow me to manually insert a row in the list but it does not restore the
ability that the List Function normally provides where a new record line
appears at the end of the list as it does in Access.
