i was sent a music file through msn messenger and was told when i recieved it
that it had been blocked by windows security for being a "harmful file". I
went to my received files, where the music file would have gone to, yet it
wasnt there. i tried searching for the file but it couldn't find it. has
windows not only blocked the file but removed it? hope someone can help,
thanks.

If it was blocked, you didn't get it so you won't find it !

That's the whole idea.

If it was truly a "music file" then it wouldn't be considered harmful. Chances are that is
was a faux music file but actually malware !

I disagree completely.

The same thing happened to me. I received the files (mp3s) played them from
my "received files" folder for msn messenger... they worked fine, but then
when I tried playing them directly from the msn window by pressing on the
directory path to the actual file, I got the "harmful" message and it blocked
access to the file and promptly moved it to some UNKNOWN place. I then
attempted to locate the file through a search and manually, but without
success.

WHERE do these "harmful" "blocked" files GO???

microsoft is just overprotective. It's OUR COMPUTERS, not theirs, they should
back off and let us control whether we get a virus or not.

ok dave....

Don't try to be mr. smarty pants without doing your homework first.
Many people that I know have had the very same problem. They received
legitimate mp3 files (known to work on any computers/mp3 players)
through msn messenger, but somehow when they tried to open the files,
were told by the attachment manager that the files are potentially
harmful thus blocked.
SO FAR, there's no solution as to retrieve the so-called "blocked"
files. I've googled 1001 days and night to find the answer but none
found (not literally).
The only useful comment that I found from Jonathan Kay is that the
files are permanently deleted (so that render the files unretrievable
at all?).

I just feel bad having to ask my friends to re-send the mp3 files
again...since the mp3s that I received were huge files, continuous
remix of a particular genre of music (no infringement involved !!).

I wonder when microsoft would release a DECENT, end-user friendly
product......

I agree 200%!! It sucks!! I think that this came into windows a coule of
months ago with some new widnows update. People at Home editiion seem not to
have the problem. And not people that have not updated windows for a while.
It does nto seem to be an MSN/WLM issue, but a pure Windows issue.

Please MS. Don't!

On a related matter, I'd like to know if it's correct for windows to block
files(authentic mp3s) even when the security center it's DISABLED. Like the
other fellows mentioned, I received a mp3 using MSN mensseger and it was
deleted. I tried to copy the file's path (it's link), but I must have clicked
on it, which caused the lovely "security window" to pop up and let me know
that it found harmful files, bla bla bla.
What intrigues me is the fact that I have Security Center service disabled,
so it makes me wonder if the Windows Firewall could be running also. I have
experienced broken donwload transfers lately. The Windows Firewall service is
also disabled, I have a router.
Can somebody please post in here how the entries on the registry should look
like when both services are DISABLED?(Security Center and Windows Firewall)
Thanks a lot!
