Error msg seen when a user attempts to log into our domain. Could this be
harware related or is there a problem with the local or domain controller
profile? WindowsXP sp2 on a laptop is the setup

Can this domain user log into the domain on another computer?

Does he try to logon a DC? This is hardware issue. For the security reason, regular user should not allow to logon the DC. If you do want the user to logon the DC, this search result may help,

no he can't logon from any other domain pc; so I wonder if this is any type
of hardware issue

Have you done testing the other way? As in, can another user log into the
domain on this computer?

What do you see in this computer's event logs? Have you run gpupdate /force?

Don't quote me on this - but from my old network days I think cannot log on
interactively refers to failure to logon locally.
