Local hyperlinks to html file converted to C:\ when file is saved

I am trying to link to an html file on my local disk from a
PowerPoint presentation - without luck. Powerpoint converts the
file name (address) from the web format to a local disk format,
which my browser evidently doesn't read when it's passed from
Powerpoint.

In Powerpoint:

I use Insert Hyperlink and specify the file address by pasting in
its name in HTML protocol, e.g.,
file:///c:/Documents%20and%20Settings/Carol/My%20Documents/Psych%20105/Site/unit_2_apparent_motion.htm

I go to Slide Show, click on the link, and it opens correctly in a
web browser window.

I exit Slide Show, and save the presentation.

I go back to Slide show, click on the link, and I get an error
message: C is not a registered protocol. (The browser window
opens, so I'm guessing that it's sending this message.)

I go back to the Powerpoint file and Edit Hyperlink.

The Address that shows up is not the one I pasted in (file:///c...
above)

The File Name that shows up here has been converted to this, which
isn't recognized by my browser:
.../Psych 105/Site/unit_2_apparent_motion.htm

I've tried putting single quotes around the HTML-style address
(doesn't work), and double quotes (still converts to disk-style
address).

I'm using Powerpoint 2002 SP3, Firefox 1.0.4 as my default browser
and Windows XP SP2.

What can I do to get Powerpoint to _preserve_ the HTML-style address
that I provide? (When I use a point and click method to get the
address from the Insert Hyperlink screen, it doesn't even work
BEFORE I try to save the file - it gives me a relative address,
which the browser doesn't recognize.)

THANKS!

Carol

Instead of that, browse to the file and select it or type/paste in a normal file path:

c:/Documents and Settings/Carol/My Documents/Psych 105/Site/unit_2_apparent_motion.htm
