local area connection properties not responding

I have been trying to set-up a home network under XP and everytime I
right click on start/control panel/network connections/local are
network/properties the properties dialogue box appears but is left
blank with the hour glass never diappearing. The machine slows down and
if I look at 'Applications', explorer is hogging 99% of CPU resource!

Has any oneelse seen this? I am however happly connected to the
wireless router via the LAN card!
