Local Area Connection not showing

Hello. I have a problem I hope someone can help me with...

I formatted my computer with my Windows XP disc. I was going to install
Windows XP and make a fresh start, delete everything that was previously on
my computer. Anyways, everything was going according to plan. But when it's
finished and windows xp starts I can no longer connect to the internet. I go
to My Network Connections and try to find the local area connection but
nothing it showing, the folder is empty. Therefor I cannot configure my
Conexant DSL wireless router which
is plugged into the computer. It seems windows doesn't find the hardware or
something.
I have a wirless network at my home and the other computers here (2 laptops)
can still connect to the internet so the router itself is working fine. It
just seems like my new fresh start with just my Windows XP components on my
computer has failed or something. I need that Local Area Connection icon to
appear in My Network Places...

Can someone please help me, please?

Ps: Excuse my English, I'm from Iceland.

You more than likely need to install the drivers for your Network Interface
Card that is inside your PC. Click start/Run, then type (No quotes)
"devmgmt.msc" and hit enter (or OK). The expand the + sign nnext to Network
Adapters, and right click on the card there, properties, Driver tab,, update
driver button. Then install the driver using the prompts from your Network
card CD, or wherever it may be (e.g.. a resource CD that maybe came with
your PC when it was built). If you cannot find it, you may get the device
name, and go to the manufacturer's web site, and download the driver.

Also have you installed service pack 2 yet? the drivers you need could
be in there. otherwise what dadimar said seems to be your problem.

Hello Tom and thanks for your response.

When I followed your instructions Device Manager window opened. The
higlighted area was on Other Deviced and the expand button had been clicked.
A question mark is in front of the following devices:

Ethernet Controller
Mutimedia Audio Controller
Network Controller
Paralell Device

If I right click on these items I can choose:

Update driver...
Disable
Uninstall
Scan for hardware changes
Properties

If I choose update driver I get a "Welcome to the Hardware update wizard"
message. Then I have to install from a CD or update through the internet. It
would be no problem if I only could connect to the internet and be able to
see Local Area Connection icon at My Network Places.

I don't have a CD to set up any drivers. I tried to find drivers on
www.conexant.com (my router is from them) but did not find any that worked. I
could not even find a support email adress. Lame service I guess, or I'm just
too stupid to find these things on their website.

Hi,

Follow inline as lyinrgrvs posted a relevant question regarding SP2.

Anyway, didn't your PC come with install disks for your hardware (e.g.
drivers for your sound and video cards). Call your PC maker, as I feel it is
safe to say that you didn't build it yourslef. If you got it from another
person, contact them for relevant disks. Also, you don't need to update your
router (or get a driver for it, there are none needed), your need is for
your ethernet controller. Maybe you have some documentation that came with
the PC that will list all of the hardwares and their respective brands and
serial numbers? If so, refer to that, and find the driver(s) for your
ehthernet controller.

Hello Tom.

I do have SP2.

I'll try to contact my PC manufacturer and ask them about this problem with
the drivers. When I bought the computer WinXP was already set up and I don't
think I got any CD's with it. Perhaps just some recovery CD's....

But there's one thing I don't understand, why isn't the Local Area
Connection icon not showing in My Network Connections? I formatted my laptop
not so long ago and it was no problem, it was showing there "Local Area
Connection: Network cable unplugged". I only had to get a driver for my
wireless network card in that case so WinXP would recognise the wireless card.

Thanks alot for your help Tom. You're a true sport...

Hi

See if registering the following DLLs helps:

From Start/Run, run the following commands:

regsvr32 %windir%\system32\atl.dll

then

regsvr32 %windir%\system32\hnetcfg.dll
regsvr32 %windir%\system32\netshell.dll
regsvr32 %windir%\system32\netcfgx.dll
regsvr32 %windir%\system32\netman.dll

Then do a reboot.

Torgier, his devices are not installed properly, as he stated in his second
post

http://groups-beta.google.com/group/microsoft.public.windowsxp.general/msg/0ccd8174991a2786,

that the devices needed, are listed under "Other Devices" in the Device
Manager with the exclamation marks next to them (he stated question marks).

I have similar problems. I recently re-installed windows XP from a friend's computer. It was a 2001 Dell Dimension. Mine is a 2003 Dell Dimension 4600.

1. It only shows 640 by 480 resolution and 16 bit color in the settings. I looked in the device manager folder and nothing having to do with it comes up.

2. No LAN comes up in Network Connections. I have an ethernet cable running from my computer to the home router, but no connection. I also tried installing a wireless receiver with the CD, but no luck. In device manager folder no "network apapters" comes up.
Along with that I have 5 things listed in other devices with ? and ! as their icons
-Ethernet Controller
-Multimedia Audio Controller
-SM Bus Controller
-Universial Serial Bus (USB) Controller
-Video Controller (VGA Compatible)

I do have the Dell Resource CD from my original computer, but when I clicked on update the driver on each of them, no driver was found on the CD.

I believe that I just don't have all of the correct drivers installed, but I don't know which drivers to install from the Dell Resource CD. I can't update for that computer at all because I can't connect to the internet.

If any of this helps, under system properties:

System:
Microsoft Windows XP
Home Edition
Version 2002

Computer:
Intel(R)
Pentium(R) 4 CPU 2.80GHz
2.79 GHz
512 MB of RAM

Advice please?
