local area and modem connection??

I have a local area connection but allso i wont to connect to a remote
computer
with a modem without disableing the local area connection. but when i
connect
through my modem i cannot ping the computer that i connected through my
modem??
How can i tell windows to ping through my modem???

Remove/clear the Gateway on the Local Area connection

Dosent work!!!
When my local area conn.(removed my gateway) and modem are active it dosent
ping through modem
but when i disble my lan it pings?!

The modem needs to be the first available connection.

how do i make it "first available".
Dose that mean that i have to first activate the modem then the lan?
