Loading IX8 beta problem

M

Mapo

I was running Windows XP and IE 7.
When I decided to load IX 8 beta.
IX 8 is now running but I think I must have done something wrong because
after I had loaded IX 8 beta I got a message saying, Windows cannot find
C:\DOCUME~1\Owner\LOCALS~\Temp\IE8-WindowsXP-x86-ENU[1].exe.Make sure you
have typed the name correctly and then try again. To search for the file,
click start button and then click search
.. I have done a search on my laptop with no results. If I need to type the
file in, I don’t know where to type it. I don’t want to type it in the wrong
place and make matters worse. Any help, would be appreciated.

Have you gone to the support areas given to you when you downloaded and
installed the beta product you have decided to test?
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/internet-explorer/beta/

Specifically:
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/internet-explorer/beta/support/faq.aspx

Which may lead you to:

You have to search to include hidden.
If IE 8 functions, run disk cleanup and clear out your temp files

That is the name of the IE8 installer. What you did wrong was installing a
beta product.

Are you saying you did not realize that Internet Explorer 8 Beta was ...
Beta?
Or are you just saying you did not know what "Beta" meant?

From the products home page:
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/internet-explorer/beta/

They have a link titled, "What does 'Beta' mean?" and if you hover over it,
you get "A beta product is software that is ready for user evaluation, but
still undergoing testing. You may experience bugs or compatibility issues
with web sites while browsing." and if you click "Learn More" from that, you
might see this message:

"Beta software is at a stage in the development process where it is ready to
be evaluated by users while still undergoing testing. Internet Explorer 8
Beta 2 is close to its final release, but you may encounter a few bugs or
compatibility issues while browsing websites.

If you're okay with using a beta product, install Internet Explorer 8 Beta 2
and take it for a test drive. We think you'll agree that it's faster, safer,
and easier to use than ever. If you don't like it you can easily uninstall
it whenever you want.

You can find uninstall instructions at our support page for Internet
Explorer 8 <
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/internet-explorer/beta/support/faq.aspx#faq1_1

We understand if you feel uncomfortable installing beta software. Check this
website in the coming months to see when the "final" version of Internet
Explorer 8 is available."

Which should have been read by you before installing anything on your
machine and if read now (the web page above was linked to already in your
conversation here) should give you the answer to your new question about
uninstalling.

It's looking in your temporary files for something. Sounds like you did not
download the install file, save it to your computer and then run it - but
instead clicked on a link and ran it instead of saving it. Then, your
Internet Explorer settings were such that when the Internet Explorer
window(s) were closed, it cleared out that temporarily downloaded executable
it was installing from.

You could download the latest Beta, SAVE it, run it and install from it:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=33FB40FD-2EE2-476A-A152-ED03734691B3

That should correct the error message.

Or you could decide you are not in the mood or at the point where you can
give productive suggestions on what to fix/change about said beta product
(at least in terms of using your production (and possibly stable) machine
for testing new software.) Then you could attempt to uninstall it (you
might have to install it over itself anyway - but try to remove it first):

http://www.microsoft.com/windows/internet-explorer/beta/support/faq.aspx#faq1_1

In the future - you might want to read more carefully *before* jumping in
head first. ;-)
