loading FP

Hi

Using FP 2000 as part of office 2000 premium with XPPro and IIS5.

XP hung so rebooted. FP will now not load, giving the message "Microsoft
FrontPage application file has encountered a problem and needs to close. We
are sorry for the inconvenience."
Nice that they are sorry, but not very helpful.

Have re-installed Office entirely, but no solution. Re-installation signals
a problem with one of the webs, saying I should remove
www\_vti_pvt\services.cnf - but such a file is not there.

Where do I go from here? Is there some way of disabling/deleting the webs so
that FP can come in unimpeded (cant rename inetpub)

go into IIS management console and delete the offending web. hopefully this
will allow FrontPage to open.

there is also a routine for clearing up FrontPage problems and it should
make FrontPage forget the last web opened. I'll paste it below:
9. In Windows Explorer, find and delete all FP Temp Files. By default,
these reside in C:\Documents and Settings\username\Local
Settings\Temp\FrontPageTempDir.
10. In Windows Explorer, find and delete all hidden *.web files
11. In Windows Explorer, find and delete the cmdui.prf file.

Hi Chris,

Did all that but no go I'm afraid.

There were no .web files and no to delete. I removed ALL the webs fron
inetpub/wwwroot and still no load. Uninstalled and re-installed FP again -
still no load.

I wonder if the FP extemsions are properly installed? I dont know enough to
verify this. How do you install them anyway?

Is it possible to disable IIS5 so that FP searches for the extensions on the
remote web server instead? If it loads, then it would have to be the
extensions on the local server causing the problem.

What happens when you remove FrontPage from the add/remove programs in the
"control panel", then re-install it?

also, I had a similar problem with fp 03 and it required me to do some
updates both on the OS (windows update) and also Office update. You should
check both of these things too.

OK Chris - thanks for your help

I think it is an extensions probem, but I dont know enough technically to be
able to sort it out. How are they installed in the first place? Can I
disable IIS5 so that FP will connect with the remote server? My FP is part
of Office premium - I have done repairs and re-installations to no avail.

Anyway, the situation is a bit urgent, and Dreamweaver still works. Will
sort out FP later, and keep you in touch.

IIS on your local machine has no impact on you connecting to a remote server unless you have named
your local web with your domain name, i.e., mydomain.com
