live video window in Powerpoint

Does anyone know how to add a live video feed window in
powerpoint. I have a webcam (firewire) and I want the
output to appear in a window in my presentation.

Thanks, but the real question is: what "other" program
can I use to display the live video image on the desktop

Depending on what the web camera uses to encode it's video you might be able
to use a Windows Media Player control and point at the web camera.

One thing that I have done is to use Windows Media Encoder with a web cam.
I like the price of it (free). You set it up on the machine that has the
web cam installed (in my case a USB one) and set the source as the web
camera device. By default WME uses port 8080 for connections to it. Then
in the media player control you set the url to connect to
http://machinename:8080 and viola you have streaming video. With WME you
can control the stream rate as well as the frame rate and size if you want.
I don't know if the WMP control inserted in PPT is like a browser control
and needs the url reset each time a slide strolls through. I'll test and
repost in a little while.

This seems to work except there is a 10 second delay between the inputted video and the video that is being viewed in the ppt presentation using Window Media Player object. Am I doing something wrong?

No you are not. The setup is streaming video which has some inherent
delays. If you are interested in the why see this:
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/howto/articles/BroadcastDelay.aspx
I have not been able to reduce the delay below 10 seconds or so.

I don't know of method to grab frames directly from a web camera device and
display in PowerPoint. The Windows Media streaming is the only way I have
done it. If you find another method I would love to hear about it. I know
it can be done outside of PPT because the cameras usually come with some
type of viewing software. Maybe if you have the camera on the same machine
as the presentation you could insert an object of the viewing software some
how. I had the same problem with streaming a web cam.

Please report back if you discover anything.

[CRITICAL UPDATE - Anyone using Office 2003 should install the critical
update as soon as possible. From PowerPoint, choose "Help -> Check for
Updates".]
[TOP ISSUE - Are you having difficulty opening presentations in PowerPoint
that you just created (you can save, but not open)? -

Hello,

If none of the suggestions provided give you the functionality that you
were looking for or, if you (or anyone else reading this message) have
suggestions for how and why you think PowerPoint should provide this
functionality (or make it easier), don't forget to send your feedback (in
YOUR OWN WORDS, please) to Microsoft by either:

A) If you are using Microsoft's web-based, online newsreader for Office
communities (http://www.microsoft.com/office/community/en-us/default.mspx),
click on the "New" drop-down menu and choose "Suggestion for Microsoft"
from directly within the newsreader web page.

OR,

B) If you are using another newsreader (such as Microsoft Outlook Express),
submit your suggestion using your web browser at the following address:
http://register.microsoft.com/mswish/suggestion.asp

It's VERY important that, for EACH wish, you describe in detail, WHY it is
important TO YOU that your product suggestion be implemented. A good wish
submssion includes WHAT scenario, work-flow, or end-result is blocked by
not having a specific feature, HOW MUCH time and effort ($$$) is spent
working around a specific limitation of the current product, etc. Remember
that Microsoft receives THOUSANDS of product suggestions every day and we
read each one but, in any given product development cycle, there are ONLY
sufficient resources to address the ones that are MOST IMPORTANT to our
customers so take the extra time to state your case as CLEARLY and
COMPLETELY as possible so that we can FEEL YOUR PAIN.

IMPORTANT: Each submission should be a single suggestion (not a list of
suggestions).
