Live One Care

Does Windows Live One Care, at $50.00 per year, take the place of an AV app
and other malware aps?
Do I understand correctly that it also includes a "registry cleaner"? If so,
can this be run on demand by the user--or is it somehow "automatic"?
Do users of this ng recommend it highly?

Live One Care is a dead product... it's discontinued as of several
months ago.

When it WAS still being supported, it could easily be found for
$20/yr.

I now see Microsoft Security Essentials, "available later this year." I
suppose my original questions will apply to this program as well. However,
since the new program will be "free," then it probably wouldn't replace a
good AV program.
What caught my attention in what I read about Live One Care was that it
included a registry cleaner. I know the MVPs generally frown on them, so I
thought it noteworthy that even Microsoft was saying that a registry should
be periodically "cleaned."

Are you sure? See:

To OP: I wouldn't waste my money on it. And "registry cleaners" are very
often much nore trouble than they're worth and you would be wise to
avoid them!

To be protected, do the following:

- Make sure you are running the Windows Firewall. Better, also use a NAT
router.

- Make sure your system is patched. That is, use Windows Update to make
sure you have the most recent security patches installed.

- Run an antivirus program. AVG, Avira, and Avast are all good and there
are free versions available for each. NOD32 (which is not free) has an
excellent reputation.

- Run an antimalware program such as MalwareBytes Anti-Malware and/or
SUPERAntiSpyware (these programs specialize in spyware). Again, there
are free versions of these, too.

Still available (for a limited time only) and only from Microsoft, for about
$50 bucks.

I don't understand what's going on then. That article is almost one year
old. Yet, as you can see, Microsoft is still offering this product!

Anything to get more money, hmm?

No doubt Microsoft wants to make as much money as it can. My point is
that it doesn't seem discontinued to me since it is still available. And
I'm not talking second-hand availability, either.

<sigh>

As it turns out, it is NOT discontinued - YET. It was supposed to be
discontinued June 30. That said, the FREE replacement - Microsoft
Security Essentials - is in beta.

Anyone considering purchasing OneCare should take that into account.

Windows Live OneCare is subscription-based software that, once installed on
your PC, runs continuously in the background and automatically updates
itself. Windows Live OneCare offers persistent, always-on security features
that generally don’t require any action on your part. Support is scheduled
to end in 2010.

Windows Live OneCare Safety Scanner is a free Web-based service that gives
you quick, on-demand PC health and security scans to help you diagnose and
solve problems, but it does not proactively protect your PC against new virus
infections.
It also offers a registry cleaner. Although you may see numerous Msft
references to it's use as a system cleaner, this free utility offers no
direct support by Microsoft.
