LITEON DVD-RW

friend of mine just got a liteon dvd-rw, he stuck it in and when he attempts
to open the drive to see the contents he gets the message "please insert
disk into drive F:\"

there is no disk in the drive but shouldn't he still be able to access it?

also in nero he told me when he tries to change recorder he only gets his
CD-RW available and not the new LITE ON DVD-RW

he has told me it is appearing as "ATAPI DVD-ROM" in decice manager

if thats of any relevance, anyone got any pointers?

TIA

No, that is a normal reaction.

Did it come with a drivers disk? Or install instructions?

No, what would he be accessing?

"F:" is a storage-volume placeholder in the case of a
removable media type drive. "F" doesn't actually exist as a
volume or filesystem until you have media in the drive that
has that filesystem burnt to it while the disc is being
created (that is, the data being put on it with the other
settings (or defaults) from the burning software.

he should go to Nero's website and see if there's an update
for his version of Nero. If he's reusing the same old Nero
that came with his CDRW drive, he may need to install a
newer version (that came with the DVDRW drive?), and even
then may need an update downloaded from nero.com

There is no point in trying to use it without a disc in
it... put a disc in, update the software and then retry it.
It doesn't matter how it appears in Device Manager so long
as the program he uses works.
