The Subject of this thread is misleading. If you follow the link, it
takes you to a kb article which tells you how to configure the Windows
firewall so that the programs /do/ work. As you would have to with any
firewall.

Note: You do not have to use Windows Firewall -- you can install
and run any firewall that you choose. Evaluate the features of
other firewalls and then decide which firewall best meets your
needs. If you choose to install and run another firewall, turn
off Windows Firewall.

I guess there's no way to convince people to stop posting about
the new Windows OS as if it were freeware, I guess I will toss in
the links to the pricelessware firewalls.

an old newspaper technique called "baiting"

What better way to enforce the concept of freeware, prove that freeware
works, and dis-prove Microsofts so called focus on security at the same time
? On the other hand, one must take an active role in ones own security,
safety, and privacy, rather than relying on anything Microsoft puts out or
anything below.

But thanks for the links! :)

of course you can switch it of, just like you can with the outlook
atachments (some wat less convenient as outlook express, but still...)

But what makes me mad about it:
1)
Microsoft does not check if you already have a firewall (I have a nat
harsware firewall and Sygate running)

2)They do not look at the state of the Microsoft firewall before the SP2
update. They don't even ask. Just switch it on

3) They leave all those people who update bacaus the
systemadministrator/nephew/neighbor told them so clueless about the not
functioning of some software, since they just 'click [ok], [next] and
[finnish]'

In other words, they are to bossy to the users. ant that is wrong. Whatever
the intentions are is is wrong!

Pah.

I have just upgraded from 98 to 98SE. I went to the MS update site
recently and it told me I needed loads of security updates. I ignored it
:).

Fair enough. Just as a point of information, though, I run 98SE (clean
install) on one (older machine) and have applied every M$ update for that OS
known to man. There have been NO major problems, really.

For the record, what you will find, if you eventually choose to patch it, is
this.
1. Outlook Express 6 will fail to record a new path for attachment downloads
in the registry.
Hence, it will repeatedly offer "My Documents" - (known issue)...
2. The shortcut arrows will come back on the desktop, TweakUI won't fix it.
You will have to hack the registry manually - (known issue)...
3. The rest is just bloat (DirectX9, Media Player 9) - slows down older
machines.
4. I find M$ Java implementation a bit buggy, IE tends to crash far too
often for my taste.
Downloading Sun JRE fixed that for me (IE will use that instead).

I never get rid of the arrows... I have all manner of stuff on the
desktop and need to know what is a shortcut

Yep; don't want them
