I have purchased Windows XP which I am using now on my
desktop (Home Edition) Is it possible to use this same
Windows XP to use in my laptop? Providing I pay for some
sort of liscensing or...............?Rather than going
out and purchasing a whole new XP. Thanks
Bob

Microsoft sells additional licenses directly for retail kits. If the XP is
an OEM version, then NO, the license is only for the first PC that it is
installed on and can not be used anywhere else.

This is just more BS, not true at all.

If you input an OEM key into the website it will tell you that an additional
key may not be purchased.

Exact Message you will get
"We are sorry but the Product Key you entered does not qualify for an
Additional License. This may be due to a typing error. Additional Licenses
can only be purchased for product keys that come with the Windows XP boxed
product. If your product key came from a Windows XP boxed product, please
try entering your product key again. If you don't have a boxed product key,
please visit your nearest reseller to purchase a copy of Windows XP for this
computer. "

Greetings

Just remember OEM copies do not have an Upgrade opition. Clean Installs
only.

Read the License Agreement ("run winver") that you agreed with Microsoft
and draw your own conclusion.

You should determine that another license is requried and it's most
easily obtained by buying a license for your laptop. My hunch is that
your laptop already runs a version of Windows and so you can buy the
upgrade version.

Who said anything about buying it from MS. Only a fool
would pay what they are asking for one.

You have to have a separate license (Office has a concession for a
retail copy to be installed on a desktop and the owner's laptop, but
Windows does not). While you can get an additional license, via
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/howtobuy/addlic.asp

the discount is small, and buying a second copy at a discount store will
probably prove cheaper
