My favourite distro is Ubuntu:

It's very good for beginners, and more experienced users will like
having that "workstation feel" to it. It's Linux that "just works", and
comes on one CD.

They can even send you a CD free of charge - although I don't know how
long that takes. Your best bet is to download the isos, if you can. My
hat goes off to Mark Shuttleworth, who seems to have a keen intuition
about what people are looking for, a genuine philathropic motive, and
the moolah to support that end.

Ubuntu is derived from the Debian distribution, and there have been been
criticisms as to why he would want to fork the distribution if his
intentions were that pure. It could just boil down to him thinking that
he feels he could do better by calling the shots, rather than trying to
get consensus among a multitude.

Data Recovery with Linux

One of the best tools for Windows data recovery is Linux? When all else
fails and you desperately need information off of your hard drive,
Linux is your safest bet. One of the best CD-bootable distributions out
there is Knoppix (available for free at www.knoppix.org). Knoppix will
allow you to not only possibly recover lost data that Windows simply
cannot access, but also potentially fix hard drive errors and partition
tables.

I'm downloading SimplyMEPIS 3.4-1.rcl.iso now. Been a
member of MepisLovers since 7/2004. I have seen a lot
of people who were happy about Mepis. It was my first
experience with Linux and Mepis Debian has everything
most want. I am learning and many in MepiLovers have
more experience with Linux than I.
