I've heard of linux and i would like to experiment (obviously with protection) i've a very old and dusty comp sat in a dark place in my spare room which has windows 98 on it,

is it feasible that i could install and run A linux OS on a 10yr old comp?
is linux a name for another OS vendor or another type of OS?
If linux is another type of os is there a particular version of linux suited to a limited newbie and a 10yr old machine?
should i just stick to what i know? (sort of)
