Linux Mandrake On The Move

Check out this new Linux Mandrake On The Move Live CD operating system. Its
a 617 meg iso that you have to burn to cd. It installs, for me, much easier
than Knoppix, the only hardware it would not configure was my winmodem.
There is user forum support plus help files. I was just into learning about
Linux, just curious. You just put the cd into the player, reboot your
machine, Linux Mandrake installs itself without touching your "C" drive. You
run it from the cd. I think there is a way of installing it permanently to
your "c" drive but I was not going to play with it. I am not of the computer
generation so I was trying to keep things easy + safe. It works fine on my
computer but like evrything else "computer", CAUTION, USE AT YOUR OWN RISK.
Perhaps check the Linux Mandrake site or the user forums. Here is the info.

MandrakeSoft's live CD product, MandrakeMove is now available for free
download: "Everything for Office, Multimedia and Internet on a single live
CD: the final version of MandrakeMove Download Edition is now publicly
available for download. Make your Windows friends discover how powerful and
friendly Mandrake Linux is: this couldn't be easier than with MandrakeMove!
MandrakeMove also offers a commercial version with handling of a USB stick
that automatically stores personal data. Now available for purchase at
MandrakeStore." Download: MandrakeMove-i586.iso (617MB).

How was it easier than Knoppix? I thought Knoppix was teh easiest Linux
Live yet!

I think Mandrake was offended by that idea! Mandrake has long been
considered the most user-friendly distro and very good at hardware
detection. When they saw how much press Knoppix got, I think they
decided this was a very good marketing move.

I intend to try both of them and compare them at some point here.

As I was saying, I am just experimenting with various distributions of Linux
to see if it peaks my interest. I like the live cd software because it makes
no changes to my system. This way I can compare the Linux software with the
Windows equivalent. I am not of the computer generation, although I am
learning quite a lot, so I can test these things with some objectivity. For
me, learning computing is an intellectual challenge. I am also going to try
WinLinux 2003 which installs as aWindows program.

WinLinux 2003 wouldn't recognize my sound card (no distro I've tried
has yet ... $#@! HP system :), but other than that it installed
easily and ran smoothly, even on this relatively older and meager
system (96MB, 500MHz, Win98se). Not a single problem other than the
sound card incompatibility.

I'm sure there are limitations inherent in that distro that may not
exist in others, but it sufficed to give me a taste of Linux.

one in, didn't you?

Wait a minute...I just navigated the site, and if I read it right, I
need to join the Mandrake Club, or lie and say that I will. I'll keep
the 60 bucks, buy some fishing gear, and stick with Knoppix. Well, on
the other hand, maybe someday, if the circumstances permit, I may
join...naaah.

I am lazy, I guess, and BitTorrent confuses me. I'm not lazy with
regards to learning to use BitTorrent, just intellectually
challenged... and very, very afraid.

Seriously, David, have they also put it on a mirror someplace? All I
have found using Google is release candidate rc-586i on some mirrors.

Mandrake Move is available from lots of mirrors all over the world,
and there is no need to join any club.

The file name is MandrakeMove-i596.iso for a pentium computer.
Search for that filename, at google or at a university near you, and
download it from there.

I downloaded it yesterday with a speed of 200KB/s from a big
university near where I live. It took me an hour.
(Couldn't run it though, it needs at least 120MB memory and I have
just 64MB.)

When you download big files try to find a nearby university file
server for all your downloads of well known software like this. They
mirror most of them and the download speed is impressive, if you are
on a cable connection.

Its not lieing, its a free download, Mandrake has always been available
for free, its called the download version for a reason. Joining the club
opens up quicker downloads and some additional benefits.

For BT there isnt anything to learn, install it and click on a BT link, it
will open and ask you where to save the file.

Thanks David and Roger,

I usually D/L from ibiblio, but the had only the Release Candidate
i586, as did the others I checked. I'll D\L that one as the default,
but I'm going to check with John Corliss first. I want to check the
group charter re "Obligation Ware" or "Promise Ware" for downloading
through Mandrake. That's a new one on me; I'm pretty sure donation
ware is appropriate, but this is a little strange. I would like to
follow the consensus of the group. ybe it will reduce the
inflammatory comments a bit.

OK on BitTorrent; I'll give it another try. By the way, I use
Mandrake 9.0 now, and I'll be upgrading soon. I'll go back to the
site and reread the benefits.

Thanks again,
Ted
