linux interferences??

hi,
since I installed on a second hd Linux (redhat 7.2),
windows 2000 pro start got extremely sloy; my computer
configuration is the following:

ide channel 1-------+-----WIN 2000 pro (primary)
|
+-----CD RW (slave)

ide channel 2-------+-----linux (primary)
|
+-----CD ROM (slave)

Since bios settings have ide0 as default startup hd, no
choice menu is displaied and win 2000 starts automatically
(if I need linux I hold f8 during bios startup and I
manually change boot device to ide1).
Still, startup fase got very slow (almost 4 minutes on my
xp 2400+), and the loading seems to stop several time (to
wait...what??) with no hd activity.
If I unconnect linux hd everything goes back to its normal
speed.
??
why??

just to see what happens
don't disconnect your linux drive...but
disable ide1 primary in the bios
then see if your win2k boots normally

at least you can narrow it down to whether or not it's
the drive itself...or the linux installation that's slowing down the bootup

hi,
I've tried it allready: it's still slow.
The only way to make it work correctly is to unplug the
connector from the hd...
More: if the "linux" hd is connected, even if it is
disabled in the bios, the disk management tool doesn't
work.
Related: I read in the event viewer the following message:
"
WMI ADAP was unable to process the PerfDisk performance
library due to a time violation in the open function
"
tx in advance

in win9x
even if a second hd is disabled in the bios...at least a fat or fat32 drive
can still be picked up by the OS
but NT apparantly needs the bios to "hand it over"

but i multi-boot several versions of windows plus linux and have never
had a hangup like that

i assume the drive with linux on it is also using an 80pin ide cable????
if so, then just for kicks
what happens if you leave the linux hd there but remove the 2nd cd rom?

I've just tried to unconnect 2nd cd rom (R/W) but still,
as soon I connect the secondary master (linux) hd the boot
becomes extremely slow, anc the disk management tool
doesn't work anymore...
Of course every hd is connected to its controller using a
80pin cable.
I really don't know what to think...

a puzzle allright
and i;m sure if your linux installation was not running well you would have
mentioned that...
which makes it look like the drive itself is not defective

no more ideas here :(
