1. Very easy to set up. Put the CD in the drive and follow the wizard.
2. I don't remember if you can disable the wireless, but if you encrypt
the connection it will be secure.
3. Encrypt the wireless connection.

Try going to Linksys Help & Support. You should be able to download a .pdf of
the routers Owner Manual. That will show you what's involved.

For what it's worth, I recently changed from dialup to cable. I got a
Netgear router. As Malke said, it's a no brainer. I just put their CD in the
player and followed the prompts.

1. First of all how long have you had LINKSYS WRT54G Router?
2. If so where did you purchase it from?
3. I bought mine at Future Shop in Toronto Canada
4. The lst one I had initially gave me no problems.
4. I took it back and exchanged it for the Same Model #
5. Continued to have difficulties
6. Call a Toll Free Number which is shown in the information package when
you bought it.
7. I called Linksys Directly, just prior to calling them Typed in Google
Linksys = WRT54G=known issues=there I discover that there we NUMEROUS know issues[/quote said:
8. I called Linksys and they tried to help me, towards the end of our
conversation she said Linksys knows of the problems. Asked her why don't the
recall that model #
9. Her reply was Linksys has so many on the market it would cost them a mega
$$$
10. She told me to take back again the same model and buy the model that has
S at the end.
11. Did that, got full refund and looking in the store for the identical
model ending in S.
12. That night I called Linksys
13. I uninstalled the drives for the older version
14. Inserted the setup disk and immediately it connected me online
15 My son has his PC in his bedroon
16. She then told me to go upstairs and took me through the steps with
reconfigure my IP address.
17. Within 1 half hour everything was AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA ok
18. Never had a problem since.

Hope this helps, I would apprecated your feed back to: (e-mail address removed)

I have the WRT54G, but the S model is just a later version. I highly
recommend it - if it is being driven with Linux firmware - as it is then
very configurable with many third-party firmwares.

Yes.

c. what do you have to do to keep people from stealing your connection with
the wireless

For more Linksys information, opinions, how-tos, and peer support than you're
ever likely to need, go to http://www.linksysinfo.org/

Until the most recent version (v. 5), Linksys WRT54G and WRT54GS were extremely
popular with those who like to tweak their hardware because the firmware for
these devices was Linux-based. Thus, 3rd party developers wrote customized
firmware that enabled various features that the hardware was capable of but
that Linksys had not enabled in its stock firmware. In Version 5.0 , Linksys
switched to a proprietary OS for its firmware, which is not compatible with
these 3rd party firmwares. There was enough of a market demand that Linksys
released a separate model of the WRT54G that still has the Linux-based code:
WRT54GL. I don't think this is an "S" model.

To make matters even more confusing, after Linksys came out with its basic "G"
models, they had the "GS" (G with "speedbooster") models, followed by the "GX"
(G with "SRX" -- a "MIMO" or multiple input multiple output multi-antenna
technology), and now the just-released "N" (based on the "approved draft" of
the 802.11n spec). The whole wireless speed thing is a bit more marketing than
reality. Unless you plan on transferring very large files between computers on
your own LAN, the speed limiter will likely be your Internet connection, not
your wireless router.

Given that you're not planning on going wireless just yet, I'd suggest getting
the cheapest model (WRT54G) now. By the time you're ready to go wireless, the
N models may have matured to the point that you'll want to get them. (They're
not quite there yet: http://www.eweek.com/article2/0,1895,1952662,00.asp and
