Linksys Router & RC1

Charlie

Has anyone had a problem connecting to the Internet using a Linksys WRT54GS
router? I am running Vista Home Premium RC1 and IE7. When connecting through
the router (cat5 not wireless) I can only get to certain web sites. For
example I can get to www.yahoo.com but not to any of the Microsoft Web Sites
listed in the Favorites Center on IE7. When I bypass the router and attach
directly to the cable modem everything works fine. This did not occur when
running Vista Beta 2. I have also upgraded the firmware on the router to the
newest version. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I have the exact same problem. I thought it was a problem with Windows
Vista, but when I read this, I connected my computer directly to the
internet and now I can access all sites.

Hi Charlie,

When going thru the Linksys Router, did you properly config your
Workgroup in Vista? I am using a Router and I can get to all Websites in
Windows Vista Ultimate RC1 5728 version.

Wait a sec. "Vista Home Premuim RC1" This was never released to Beta
Testers. The correct name is Windows Vista Ultimate RC1 5600 or 5728
versions.

Actually, just right now I figured out the problem.

It's apparently a feature called SPI on the routers that doesn't sit well
with the Vista TCP/IP stack. I hope some enlightened techie can guide us
through to disabling it or getting around it.

Ouch! There is no way I am "fixing" a problem in Vista by
disabling state inspection on my firewall. That has got to be a
joke right? MS doesn't actually expect us to do that, do they?

Painful.

No, don't disable your SPI firewall. Try this:

- Click start
- Type: cmd
- Right-click cmd.exe when it appears under Applications
- Click Run As Administrator
- Type the following: netsh int tcp set global autotuninglevel=disabled
- Press enter
- Restart your computer

Sam, another thing to try is to add your ISPs DNS server as an alternative
DNS in your TCP/IP IPv4 settings.
My primary DNS server is my router, alternative is ISP's DNS server.

If your PC uses a Marvell Yukon ethernet controller, this is a bug in build
5600 and older. Build 5728 fixes it.

If you don't have 5728, you can go into Device Manager and bring up the
Properties page for your Marvell. In the Advanced tab, disable all of the
"checksum offload" options (4 of them,I think). This should fix you up.

Tim, this fixed the problem. I have a Marvell Yukon controller and after
making the suggested changes everything worked. The only question is why
would it work when I connected directly to the cable modem when the problem
wasn't the router but the ethernet controller? Just curious.

Thanks again.
