Linkstation 250Gb runs out of space when directories show 140Gb?

Hi

My Linkstation has a share, with two subdirectories, that get backups
via Pheonix backup, from two machines that are networked. One
subdirectory shows 80Gb the other shows 60GB, however, the linkstation
is saying its nearly full with 220Gb of the 250Gb available being used.
The only other folder is the info folder that only appears to have a
few Mb in it.

I dont understand why the linkstation is saying 220Gb has been used
when doing windows properties on each folder shows significantly less
space being used.

I have used the linkstation diagnostics to run a scan but it reported
everythign fine.

This has happened to 2 seperate linkstations (the first one did it too,
but also started making nasty noises and got replaced) but now the new
one has apparently run out of space too.#

Anybody have any ideas?

A lot of small files and a large cluster size? Each file will take
at least one cluster in size.

I see the Linkstation comes with an USB port. Since it can be connected
directly to a computer, I'm pretty sure it is preformat a drive to FAT32
since this file system is supported by most OSes. FAT32 makes a large
cluster size which is very inefficient if you've got heaps of small files.
There is a difference between windows reporting the size of a folder and the
disk usage of the folder. On my computer the My Documents folder have a size
of 888 MB, but the disk usage is 923 MB, which leaves 35 MB of wasted space
due to the file system.

I am not familiar with the product, but some network shared storage systems
will let you (re-)format a drive as ext3 or ext2. Without a driver
(http://www.fs-driver.org/) you'll not be able to use it attatced directly
to the pc using the USB port. The ext file systetem should give you a more
efficient use of the drive.
