links stopped working

Suddenly I can't double-click a link and have ie open automatically (it used
to work). Saved links and links in email only work if ie is already open.
How do I fix this?
 
Turn off your pop-up blocker and ensure Internet Explorer is your default
browser in your Internet Options icon in your Control Panel.

The only pop-up blocker I use is whatever the Google tool bar does, and I
haven't changed anything about it in at least a year--also, ie is and always
has been my default browser. I cannot detect anything changed in setup to
suddenly cause this.
