Links don't work - just get blank pages

Help!
When I am browing the internet, many pages do not load and it's not
the web site - it something about my computer.
What happens is I click on a link, and all I get is a blank page and
the IE status bar says 'done'.

I have just set up my computer and cannot get into MSN, Microsoft
updates, etc.
Perhaps it has someting to do with security setting or firewall
configuration?
I don't know.

Can anyone offer some advice about what could cause the problem?
