Links do not work....

Zadig Galbaras

Hi!

A friend of mine have problem on certain websites when clicking on a link.
At Google and at his banking service if he clicks a link the hand of
business comes up for a minute or so, and the focus returns to that window
without showing any new window or the new site at the end of that link.

He runs on a pretty modern HP
Windows XP Home SP2 Norwegian edition
ADSL with a wireless network
Norton Antivirus

I have run HijackThis, rebooted into safe mode and there I ran Spybot and
AdAware.
I found two spyware, and got them fixed.
After reboot and problem still there, I created a new user, but even the new
user had the same problem.

I had the firewall in Windows Security turned off, but it didn't help
either.
I cannot see any unusual processes running in the task manager
(ctrl+alt+del)

Is there anybody here who can help?

I wonder if a reinstall of MSIE, and then use the "Repair"-option would
help?
Is it possible to do that in Windows XP Home version?

Go to File Types (My Computer...Tools...Folder Options...File Types tab)
Scroll down to the URL: Hypertext Transfer Protocol file type, click to
highlight, click Edit, click Open, click Edit (slightly different with Me -
click to highlight, click Advanced, click Open, click Edit).

Application used: "C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe" -nohome
Use DDE box should be checked
DDE Message: "%1",,-1,0,,,,
Application: IExplore
DDE...not running: <blank>
Topic: WWW_OpenURL

Okay out.
Check the same for the file type URL: Hypertext Transfer Protocol with

Hi there, I'm also having this problem. I've tried all these things and am
still having no luck. I also tried to reinstall XP but it won't let me
because it detects I have a newer version (SP2).

Seems to be something called "req.dll" lurking as a BHO in OE. I disabled it
and now everything's fine.

Any idea what it is? Spyware or something?

Thanks Jan

Unfortunately I had already tried Hijack This! and it was unable to delete
the file because it was always running in memory even in safe mode. I did,
however, find a program called Killbox.exe which did the trick, because it
deletes the evil file on restart before Win login loads it up.

Maybe this will be useful to someone else.

You're very welcome! Glad to hear you were able to resolve your problem.
Good job!

Yes...the Killbox is a good tool, and very powerful, as you can see.

Thank you for posting back and letting us know what worked for you, and for
the benefit of other readers who might have a similar problem. :)
