Linking tables makes linked database readonly

Using Access 2000, when I link tables in two mdbs the source database becomes
readonly, ie: I cant make any changes to modules, forms, reports etc if I
have the database open (even when linked tables are not being accessed)

Is there any way around this?

Do you have rights to write in the directory where the database is to which
your tables are linked?

yeah no problems there - the problem arises when anyone has either source or
target DB open
