If you mean that you want to be able to change styles by promoting and
demoting paragraphs, you'll have to set them up in an outline-numbered
list (they don't actually have to be numbered). See http://www.shaunakelly.com/word/numbering/OutlineNumbering.html.
By default, most styles are based on the Normal style; you can modify
this style to quickly change font formatting of all of those styles in
a Word document or template.
Conversely, you shouldn't use the Normal style to change something
that you don't want to transfer to those "child" styles, such as line
spacing, spacing before/after.
