linking styles together

When creating a new style, how can it be linked to other styles (e.g. be
linked like heading 1, heading 2... in the normal dot?)
 
If you mean that you want to be able to change styles by promoting and
demoting paragraphs, you'll have to set them up in an outline-numbered
list (they don't actually have to be numbered). See

On the other hand, if you want a style to inherit settings (such as
font, font size, etc.) from another style, see:

By default, most styles are based on the Normal style; you can modify
this style to quickly change font formatting of all of those styles in
a Word document or template.

Conversely, you shouldn't use the Normal style to change something
that you don't want to transfer to those "child" styles, such as line
spacing, spacing before/after.
