Linking/referencing question numbers

Thanks for the response. The problem with this approach is that the
reference is to the number, irrespective of what text follows it. When I
insert a question before the original question 2, my reference now refers to
this new question (the new question 2) and not the original question (which
is now question 3). Updating the field does not solve the issue...the
reference remains linked to (new) question 2 and does not adjust to question
3 (original question 2). Is there a way around it? Is there another feature
that can resolve this?

When you do the update (F9) are you doing this to whole document (Ctrl+A) or
just one of the numbers? If the number does not changes does the link when
clicked send you to the wrong question?
The approach Stefan describes is correct and does allow for any and all
insertions and deletions you may do to your questions.
Sometimes these fields can become locked so they don't update, if selecting
the whole document then refreshing does not work, try selecting the whole
document again, then press Ctrl+Shft+F11 to unlock any fields that
inadvertently became locked (by Ctrl+F11).
Hope this helps

Thank you all! Suzanne, this helps!

Assuming you're not tracking changes (in which case numbering in general
won't be correct until you accept all the changes), the usual cause of this
problem is that you have gotten the inserted question inside the bookmark of
the original one. See
