Linked files

I have a file that has many links to other excel files. When I call up this
file I click no to update links. It still takes forever for the file to open
- just as long as if I told it to update the links. Can someone explain this
to me? Seems to me it should open quickly and just display the data that was
present the last time the file was saved.

Could be a couple of different issues.

How big is the file? How fast is your processor? How much RAM do you have?
Is the file access over a network or via your local drive? If the former,
how fast is your network connection?

Finally, perhaps Excel has to iterate through all cells linked to external
workbooks and tell itself not to update values based on those links.

2 tabs around 300 rows each - 6695kb. Processor is Intel 2793 Mhz. Ram is 1
gig. Yes it is over the network but the network is fast - I can open huge
files faster then this one. Your last comment was my question? I would like
to know if that is really the problem and if possible the reasoning behind it.

Maybe you could try an experiment.

Move all the files to a folder on your harddrive (C:). Then make sure all the
links point to that location and see how long it takes to open this test
workbook.

In my experience, access to network drives take a lot longer than access to
local drives.
