linked contacts returnes an error - Outlook 2007

D

Dave Horne

I'm using Outlook 2007 under Vista Home Premium. (I should probably also
mention I imported contacts a year ago from Outlook 2000.)

Just now I opened a Contact and clicked on a linked Contact. (This 'linked'
contact is shown under the Notes field and next to the small Contact window
at the bottom of the Contact.) I go to click on that linked Contact and
receive the following message -

Cannot perform the requested operation. The command selected is not valid
for this recipient. An internal function returned an error.[end]

Why do I have this problem with Outlook 2007 when I did not have it with
Outlook 2000?

Thanks, DH

I see a pattern here. This problem is only with my older, imported Outlook
2000 Contacts. If I create a new Contact and add a linked Contact, there is
no problem.

I assume this is a known ... issue?

Of course. Well documented here every day and one of the many reasons you
never import Outlook data. Links are among the many data you lose when you
do.

OK, the damage ius already done. What do I do, recreate every Contact as a
new Outlook 2007 Contact and redo all these older Contacts?

Has anyone written a program that takes all the fields from an older Contact
and pastes them into a 'freshly minted 2007 Contact'?

Thanks, DH

None that I know of. You don't have to recreate every Contact. Just recreate
the link.
Did you back up your data file before you imported it?

Russ, that was a year ago. I'm sure I backed up my data but the point is
now moot.

Thanks for the tip, I'll just recreate the links.

Is there any help in the future for problems like this? Importing a file
from the same family program shouldn't be an issue - I mean, I went from
Outlook 2000 to Outlook 2007. By the way, additional categories I made
carried over just fine.

I see little likelihood that this will change. Importing has never been the
correct way to transfer Outlook data, and will not suddenly become the
correct way. Microsoft should simply acknowledge that fact and remove that
feature entirely from Outlook.

Brian, I see that my outlook.pst file is of the Personal Folders File
(97-2002) flavor.

Can I convert that ... easily to the newer pst format?

Thanks, DH

Brian, would this work/ I remove my older flavor pst file, the one that is
97 - 2002, and place it on my desktop (or any other location outside of its
original location). I then create a new flavor pst file in Outlook and
import the info from the older one to the newer one?

Would that work? Thanks, DH

Russ Valentine [MVP-Outlook]

You aren't paying attention. Importing never works. It's what caused the
problem in the first place. Brian answered your question already: copy data
from the old file to the new. Do not import it. This will not, however,
re-establish the links you already broke.

D

Dave Horne

Russ, I started another thread re converison, sorry.

If I create a new 2007 pst file and copy (by dragging) folders and items,
etc. from my 97-2002 Personal Folder to the new one, will that newly
created 2007 pst file effectively convert the 'older' material ... or not.

There is no conversion necessary for the Outlook Items.
You would not copy entire folders. You would copy the folder's _contents_
from a folder in the old file to a folder in the new. Easily done with Edit

Russ, while I thank you for all your efforts, this was an exercise in
futility.

I tried exactly what you just wrote (and first backed up my outlook.pst). I
copied everything just like you wrote.

My problem first started with the command to download images in an e-mail.
Every time I tried to do that, Outlook would freeze and I was given several
options - restart, close, and a third I believe. This happened more than
several times and the only way to get Outlook to open was to shut down the
proccesses in Task Manager. It's a good thing I knew about that or I would
clicked on the option to open Outlook in SafeMode. Just shutting down
Outlook in Task Manager \ Processes did the trick ... tima and time again.

Since I had 'created' a new Office Outlook Personal Folder File (2007 pst),
I naturally assumed my non connecting links (the reason for my initial post)
in my Contacts would now work. Nope. Outlook gave me the same results as
before, or rather the same lack of results as before ... but with additional
problems.

I will just learn to live with the shortcomings of the 97-2002 pst file.

Russ, it seems if my pst file were of the 2007 flavor, I wouldn't have the
problem with receiving error messages when clicking on linked contacts (from

From there I assumed if my pst file (of the 97-2002 flavor) were converted

Since I had 'created' a new Office Outlook Personal Folder File (2007
pst), I naturally assumed my non connecting links (the reason for my
initial post) in my Contacts would now work. Nope. Outlook gave me
the same results as before, or rather the same lack of results as
before ... but with additional problems.

I will just learn to live with the shortcomings of the 97-2002 pst
file.

There is no conversion necessary for the Outlook Items.
You would not copy entire folders. You would copy the folder's
_contents_ from a folder in the old file to a folder in the new.
Easily done with Edit
Select All > Edit > Copy to Folder...

Russ, I started another thread re converison, sorry.

If I create a new 2007 pst file and copy (by dragging) folders and
items, etc. from my 97-2002 Personal Folder to the new one, will
that newly created 2007 pst file effectively convert the 'older'
material ... or not.

You aren't paying attention. Importing never works. It's what caused
the problem in the first place. Brian answered your question
already: copy data from the old file to the new. Do not import it.
This will not, however, re-establish the links you already broke.

Brian, would this work/ I remove my older flavor pst file, the
one that is 97 - 2002, and place it on my desktop (or any other
location outside of its original location). I then create a new
flavor pst file in Outlook and import the info from the older one
to the newer one?

Would that work? Thanks, DH

Is there any help in the future for problems like this?
Importing a
file from the same family program shouldn't be an issue - I mean,
I
went from Outlook 2000 to Outlook 2007. By the way, additional
categories I made carried over just fine.

Next time, just open the existing PST. File>Open>Outlook Data
File. Outlook 2007 has no problems using Outlook 2000 PSTs
directly. If you wish to move that data to an Outlook 2007 format
PST, then simply drag-and-drop.

Russ, I just had a thought as to what might have contributed to my problem
last night with me having to manually shutdown multiple opened Outlooks in
Task Manager \ Processes. I have the 'Skype Toolbar add on' in Outlook.
Sometimes when I close down Outlook, minutes later I will receive a message
asking me if I wish to shutdown Outlook (or something like that). This
'issue' only occured since I added that Skype Toolbar. Also if I close and
open Outlook too quickly, that also causes problems and I believe that is a
known Skype\Outlook issue.

Ay any rate, things seem to be fine now and I again thank you for your help.

Not sure your conclusion is correct or makes any sense. If it is, it would
be a first that I've seen reported. You should post the actual problem in
complete detail in a new thread in case someone else has seen it. This
appears more related to your Outlook items than the PST file.

Russ, it seems if my pst file were of the 2007 flavor, I wouldn't have
the problem with receiving error messages when clicking on linked
contacts (from within a Contact).

From there I assumed if my pst file (of the 97-2002 flavor) were
converted to the 2007 flavor, my problems would disappear.

I created a new 2007 pst file, copied the info from the older pst file
using the method given here but that caused even more problems.

I reinstalled my older pst file (from a backup) and will learn to live
with its limitations. Thanks for your help in all of this. DH

Russ, while I thank you for all your efforts, this was an exercise in
futility.

I tried exactly what you just wrote (and first backed up my
outlook.pst). I copied everything just like you wrote.

My problem first started with the command to download images in an
e-mail. Every time I tried to do that, Outlook would freeze and I was
given several options - restart, close, and a third I believe. This
happened more than several times and the only way to get Outlook to
open was to shut down the proccesses in Task Manager. It's a good
thing I knew about that or I would clicked on the option to open
Outlook in SafeMode. Just shutting down Outlook in Task Manager \
Processes did the trick ... tima and time again.
