I can't my links to update automatically in Excel 2000

I have a 2 budget workbooks, one name Dept and the other Forecast. The
Forecast basically references the Dept expenses for a summary P&L and
updates other financial statement projections.

With the two workbooks open I can't either to update the other sheet
until one is saved/closed and reopened.

Calculation is set to Auto and the Update remote references check box is
selected.

Any ideas?

One more comment.
Both worksheets are protected. When I open Forecast I get the password
prompt, then I get the link prompt to update all linked information and
then I have to type in the password for the Dept file. When I open the
Dept file I never get the last prompt for the password.

It kind of sounds like you have each workbook open in a different instance of
excel.

If you open excel and then file|open to open both files, does it work?

If you double click on the files inside windows explorer and they open in
separate instances, you could try this to correct it:

Close Excel and
Windows Start Button|Run
excel /unregserver
then
Windows Start Button|Run
excel /regserver

The /unregserver & /regserver stuff resets the windows registry to excel's
factory defaults.

An alternative might be to do:
Try Tools|Options|General|Ignore other applications (uncheck it)

I think I figured it out. Some how when the worksheet was updated and
saved with Dept-2003-12-10 and Forecast-2003-12-10 the links in the
spreadsheet contained the full path of the file when both were open,
rather than just Dept.xls, so I updated the links that weren't working.
