Line in and Microphone Volume sliders not available in Volume settings

I am having a problem recording sound via my Line-in input
and microphone. (windows XP) The volume sliders for these
are not available in advanced volume controls. How does
one enable these and record the input signal.

Right click on the loudspeaker icone in the taskbar.Slect Options >
Properties > Recording > OK and check what you want to appear (in your case
line-in and microphone).
