I would appreciate if anyone can advise wether it is possible to restrict the
ammount of time the kids spend on specific websites etc so they are only
allowed a certain ammount of time per day.
I understand that their may be certain programs etc which can be bought to
allow this but wondered if this can be set-up on XP or I/Explorer in any way.

There is one program that is available at present. It is called the Responsible Parental Supervision

searching with www.google.com for "nanny ware".

I use NetNany. It's configurable for multiple users, each having unique
permissions.

I use a Linksys cable router to set the hours that an internet connection is
available for my kids computer. It is not a "timer" per se, but it can be
set to allow internet use only during certain hours for varying durations.
The router itself is password protected so the restrictions cannot be
changed by the kids. Also the restricted access does not interfere with my
internet access. It can also be set to block access to sites based on URL or
certain keywords.

Just a thought.....

You need to be aware, however, that *NO* technical or software
solution is fool-proof, and _none_ can ever adequately take the place
of live parental supervision. If you cannot trust your children son to
safely/properly use the computer without supervision, you may have to
consider limiting their access to it.

Oh yes very clever but not very helpful when i'm away for a couple of weeks
on a business trip ( oh I forgot perhaps that's wrong too ). Sorry if I don't
live up to your pefect model parent expectations but I kind of thought I was
trying to be the responsible parent in trying to set up some form of parental
control for those occasions when i'm not able to supervise personally.
