limited or no connectivity

I have a desktop computer running xp wth sp2 and a 3com etherlink 10/100 pci
card
connected with an etherlink cable to a laptop running xp with sp2 and a
intel pro 1000 mt network connection.

The test on the desktop returned:
IP address: 169.254.61.131
The laptop:IP address 169.254.105.64
The hardware on both are working correctly
What could the cause possibly be?

There's nothing wrong.

A new feature in SP2 gives a warning message about "limited or no
connectivity" when a network connection is configured to obtain an IP
address automatically and there's no DHCP server on the network to
make the assignment. The message should really say "no Internet
connectivity", because local area network connectivity between the
computers works fine even with the warning.

Since your network doesn't have a DHCP server, the computers have
automatically assigned themselves compatible IP addresses in the
169.254.x.x range.

Here are some ways to eliminate the message:

1. Assign a static IP address to the network connection on each
computer. That will also make Windows XP start up faster, because the
computers won't try (and fail) to find a DHCP server on the network
Some suitable IP addresses are 192.168.0.1-192.168.0.254, with subnet
mask 255.255.255.0.

or:

2. Right-click the network connection, click Properties, and un-check
the box that says "Notify me when this connection has limited or no
connectivity".

Thank you! I did the easiest solution first and unchecked "Notify me..." and
lo and behold I can get the files over my network which the warning must have
been preventing.

You're welcome. That warning message is only a warning of a possible
problem. It doesn't stop the network from working. Something else
must have been wrong before, too.
