Limited connection or no connectivity problem

Hi,

I am having problems networking my parents computers directly using a
crossover cable. When I plug the crossover cable into the network ports of
each computer the computers both attempt to accquire IP addresses but they
both end up displaying a "limited connection or no connectivity" message.

I've followed the instructions on this webpage but to no avail:

http://www.pchell.com/support/limitedconnectivity.shtml

Here's the low down:

1) I know there aren't any problems with the cabling as I use the same cable
between my lap top and home computer without any problems.

2) Both cards are on board and appear to be working correctly (right click
properties). One card is a SIS 900 PCI faster ethernet adaptor while the
other is a VIA Rhine II fast ethernet adaptor. Incidently I have exactly the
same adaptors on my my laptop and home computer and they work perfectly!

3) My folks have an ADSL router that is connected to the one computer via a
USB port. The TCP/IP properties for this device is set to obtain IP and DNS
automatically.

4) Both network adaptors have obtain IP and DNS automatically set as well.

Any help will be most appreciated.

Thanks in advance

I had the same problem and it apears I fixed it by specifying an ip
manually for the two pc's. This alleviated the limited connectivity
issue.

This did indeed fix the problem. However it made me lose connectivity to the
internet. How can I get around this problem?

I'm not sure, I'm working on that myself. I want to be able to share
an internet connection also. I'm not exatly sure but I think it has to
do with the whole gateway, dns, etc. Which pc has net access? This
one has to be setup a certain way and then the connection has to be
shared, apparently like you would any other disk drive, etc. after
that I'm not sure. I'll let you know what I can find.

Looks like we are stuck with exactly the same problem. Networking is not
easy man. Please keep me posted.

Definitely start off by sharing your connection. In XP it is if you
right click on the internet connection in network connections and go to
the advanced tab and then click on allow other network users to connect
to through...... something like that. Then it will broadcast to the
other machines on the network that among it's other resources it has to
share it has an internet connection it can share.

One thing that was not correct was that my stupid crossover cables were
not setup right once I got that correct I had more success. Also make
sure you have unique Ip's for each machine. the subnet masks should be
the same on each and the pc that will be trying to access the internet
I thinkg for this one put in the ip of the pc with the internet
connection. so if the pc with the modem is 010.0.0.5 and the pc using
the internet connection through the network is 10.0.0.6, then plug in
10.0.0.5 for the gateway

What about DNS settings? What did you put in for them?

run net work setup wiz use option this computer (internet connecting
host)connects directly to the net other computers connects through this one

I was very careful to do that for each machine. I wish I could show
you a screen capture. It's wired. My client machine sees the internet
gateway when the host is connected, but every time I try to access the
web from the client it can't find any connection and behaves as iff it
were not connected. One thing I will add is that part of my original
problem when I was trying to just network the two machines was that I
was behind two firewalls. The windows firewall and the Zonealarm free
version I had back from when I was using windows 2000. I had to
configure zone alarm to accept the client computer as a trusted machine
in case anyone else is having this problem.

If yo like email me and I'll give you a screen capture. The host
machine knows it 's a host and the client knows it's a client. Any
other ideas?

For Young Man the DNS settings should be left blank I think. Make sure
for gateway you put the ip address of your host machine ie which ever
machines connects to the internet directly place the ip address of this
machine in te tcpip properties of the client machine.
