DJA, you don't mention what version of Excel you're using, but if you search
the topic "Specifications" in Excel 2000 help, it'll tell you that in an
Excel workbook you get three worksheets by default and the total is limited
by available memory.

Anyone know the limit to how many worksheets you can have in one excel
You are limited by available memory. The actual number of sheets
will depend on the contents and size of each sheet, but Excel can
easily handle dozens or hundreds of sheets.
I have seen in Excel 2002 ( 1Ghz Wintel ) and 2000 ( 166Mhz Wintel ) where in the options, general tab if I write the no. of sheets as 256 for a new workbook the message displayed is "The number must be between 1 and 255. Try again by entering a number in this range"
Cant understand what it means about the same being limited by available memory
The 255 limitation is the number of sheets that will exist
automatically in a newly created workbook. You can add additional
worksheets to that workbook.

You can still add sheets if the memory allows by using insert>worksheet
However a new workbook can only hold 255, the rest have to be added
manually. Are you seriously thinking about using plus 255 sheets?

That IS strange, isn't it? I suppose they thought they had to set an upper
limit for this option somewhere, and 255 was as good a number as any. Fact
remains, although the number of worksheets in a new workbook is limited to
255 or less, you can add worksheets up to the limit of your system's memory.
