Limit to number of folders in Outlook 2003?

Is there a limit on the number of folders you can have in an Outlook mailbox?

I have a user who's getting a "Cannot create new folder" error message when
she tries to create a new folder. She's using Outlook 2003 - our mailserver
is an Exchange server running Exchange 2003.

She has an absolutely ridiculous number of folders - literally hundreds -
and I'm thinking she's running up against some kind of limitation on how many
folders you can have in one mailbox.

Anybody have any ideas?

The new folder is being created in a PST or Exchange mailbox? The reason
that I ask is that PST files do have limitations.

It's an Exchange mailbox. I think I may have found the problem - her mailbox
has over five gigs of mail in it.

When you post in here, always include your version, SP level, and mode (if

No kidding. But the really weird part is, after taking two hours to download
her mailbox to a different computer, I'm able to create new folders with no
problem. She still can't create them on her machine, but I can create them
signed on to a different machine as her. Go figure.

You didn't mention the version of Exchange or if a mailbox move (5.5 to 2k3)
was involved at any time, but I would think she hit the limit of the OST.
(The legacy OST file for Exchange 5.5 has the same limits as a legacy PST.
The new "unicode" OST is a different breed.) The only way I know how to
tell the diff between the 2 is see what mailbox mode outlook 2003 sees.
Right click on "Exchange - <username>" folder. Select Properties > Advance
button > Advance tab. Section labeled Mailbox Mode is where you determine
if Outlook is in unicode or legacy (ansi) mode against the exchange mailbox.

As I mentioned in my orginal post, it's Exchange 2003. I believe there was a
move from 5.5 to 2003, but it was before my time. I just checked, and she's
running in unicode mode.

No biggie - since the problem goes away when I put her account on a
different computer, I'm just going to reload her machine. It takes a lot
less time to dump a Ghost image onto a hard drive than to try to troubleshoot
these weird issues.

Thanks for the reply, though - at least it gave me an idea where to look.

Can anyone help? I'm having the same problem too except the option to reimage
is not a good one due to client being a Director. I opened his outlook on
another
pc and was able to create folders fine in exchange. Already tried uinstalling
and reinstalling outlook on his machine but no luck. This leads me to
believe it is
probably in the registry somewhere, maybe under hkey current user? Thanks.

If you read between the lines in Dave's post, the problem was most likely
due to the OST file. Legacy (ANSI) OST files have the same file size and
item/folder count as legacy PST files.

The other thing to watch out for, is the new unicode PST/OST files located
on FAT32 drives. Maximum file size that a FAT32 drive supports is 4GB - 1
byte. (If the user is storing PST file on a non-windows platform, then
check with that vendor platform to determine what the maximum size of a
single file can be. For example, Novell has the same 4GB single file size
limitation on some of their network operating systems.)
